This article will outline the steps required for setting up your Birthday email template within MailChimp.

Two features of the Happy Birthday and MailChimp integration are the Birthday Discount Link and the Generate Discount Page. You'll find a brief description for each of these below. Click on the links to read a more detailed article for each feature.
What is the Birthday Discount Link?
Having chosen MailChimp to send out your birthday emails, you have the option for Happy Birthday to auto-generate a unique birthday discount code for each member of your Birthday Club.
When this feature is enabled, rather than creating a discount code for each new member that joins your Birthday Club, a unique Birthday Discount Link will be generated instead. That link will then be pushed, along with other new Birthday Club member details, into MailChimp ready for inclusion into your birthday email template.
What is the Generate Discount Page?
The Generate Discount Page is a unique landing page that is enabled for each of your Birthday Club members. It is the page that your Birthday Club members will be sent to when clicking on the link within their Birthday Email. This is a dynamic page that the Happy Birthday app creates in your Shopify store, known as a proxy page.
Locating your Audience Merge tags in MailChimp
When creating your email template within MailChimp, you will need to use a couple of the Merge tags related to your Audience.
For this reason, we recommend keeping two different MailChimp pages open on your browser, one of those being the Audience fields and *|MERGE|* tags page.
This practice will make it easier for you to copy the relevant Merge tag values and then paste where needed into Mailchimp's email template builder (Campaigns > Email templates), which is the second browser page we recommend you keep open.
Follow the suggested MailChimp path below to locate your Audience Merge tags page:
Audience Dashboard > Manage Audience (dropdown) > View Audiences > Click on the Audience name > Settings (dropdown) > Audience fields and *|MERGE|* tags :
Merge tag values
It's important to note, that whilst your Audience fields and *|MERGE|* tags page may look similar to the example in the screenshot below. There may be crucial differences between the actual Merge tag values on your page and those in the example screenshot below.
For example, if your page does not contain a 'Phone Number' field, then the Merge tag value for your Birthday Discount Link may be *|MERGE5|* and not *|MERGE6|*.
In this article we will be using the Merge tags for the First Name and Birthday Discount Link fields. When setting up your own template, use the Merge tag values that are associated with those fields from your own Merge tags page.
Alternatively, and perhaps the best option, is to use the 'literal' Merge tag values, which in our example are *|FNAME|* and *|BDAYLINK|* for those fields.
Creating your Email template
To begin creating your email template, head to Campaigns > Email templates:
Next, click on the Create Template button:
The next step is to choose your starting email template.
As the final email will include a link for the customers to click on and use their birthday discount, we recommend choosing a template that conveniently already has a button included. Although elements such as buttons can be added at any point:
For our example in this article, we have kept the email very simple. We deleted a few of the blocks from the email template we selected and then placed two of our Merge tag values within the relevant block fields.
Please note the placement of the *|MERGE6|* tag which relates to the Birthday Discount Link url. This is entered into the Web address (URL) button field.
When the customer receives their email and clicks on that button, they will be directed automatically to their Generate Discount Page.
Although the example above uses *|MERGE6|* as the tag for the Birthday Discount Link url, your own Merge tag value may be different. Please see the previous article section above, Merge tag values for more details. Always use the relevant values from your own Merge tags page!
Once you're happy that you have completed all the required fields, click the Save & Close button bottom right of the page to save your email content:
Next step is to click on the Save and Exit button that appears:
Finally, you will then be prompted to name and Save your email Template:
