Whether you're using Shopify POS in your retail store or whether you use it for selling goods at conferences, exhibitions, events or pop-ups, you can still collect customer Birthday sign-ups during POS transactions.
In this article, we will guide you through the few simple steps required for set up and then how to initiate the birthday club sign-up for your customer.
Steps
1. Navigate to Point of sale > Settings within your Shopify admin area. If you have previously used Happy Birthday on POS then you may see the Smart grid tile enabled. If so then it is important to now click Remove as this relates to the old style 'Loyalty' tile that will soon be deprecated by Shopify.
2. Click Add for the Additional areas option. This setting enables the features discussed in this article.
Your settings should now resemble the screenshot below:
How do I capture birthday's via POS?
After a POS checkout, an Apps section will appear on the right hand side of the Order Summary screen:
Clicking on the Capture Birthday option will open up the Birthday Sign-Up form ready to capture your customer's birthdate
You can either ask the customer for their birthdate or, spin the iPad around (device stand dependant) and ask them to fill in their d.o.b and then ask them to hit the submit button:
The form in example above is automatically using the name and email details from the order
Please Note:
If you had already created the customer as part of the checkout process, or you selected a previous customer to be associated with the order, then the Email address field will be pre-populated within the Birthday Sign-Up Form.
We do recommend selecting the customer prior to checkout as this will also let you see if they have already joined your birthday club. If they are already birthday club members then both the Email address and Birthdate fields will be pre-populated.
Should you have navigated away from the Order Summary page before collecting the customer's birthday, then you can also access the Birthday Sign-Up form via the Orders section of your POS screen.
Just click on the order and you will find the option on the right hand side:
Once birthdates have been captured via POS, that's it! The app will take care of emailing your customers with a discount code on (or possibly before) their special day.
What if I don't want to embarrass my customers by asking for their year of birth
The format of the birthdate will display depending on the format you have selected within the Happy Birthday app. Should you wish to change the format, or perhaps hide the Year of birth field, then we have an article that explains the various options for setting the birthday date format.
Changing the date format won't affect the dates of customers already signed-up to your Birthday club, it will just change how we present the date format in forms and in the user interface of the Happy Birthday app.
