If you obsess over relationship marketing and are using Shopify POS in your retail space, then our Happy Birthday app has a great feature to enhance the in-store customer experience.
What does this feature do?
In short, Happy Birthday can display if a customer has an available Birthday discount to use on their purchase during the checkout. Here is how the interaction would typically work:
- A Sales Assistant will enter the Customer's email address during checkout.
- The Happy Birthday app will automatically check to see if that Customer has joined your Birthday Club and if they have a valid Birthday discount to use.
- If there is a valid discount, it will be presented within the checkout screen.
- The Sales Assistant can then apply the discount to the checkout immediately.
There's no need to navigate away from the checkout, the entire process is fast and easy.
Why we like this feature
This feature has the potential to really make a Customer's day and build on the importance that you place on the customer experience. The customer may have forgotten to use their discount code online, or, they may have misplaced their Birthday Email containing their discount code, so you now have the opportunity to remind and delight them at the counter and even start a conversation if that's your thing.
For your peace of mind, we've built in checks to ensure that discount codes auto-generated by our app can not be used more than once... so if a Customer has already used their unique auto-generated birthday discount code, then it won't be visible within the POS checkout to use again.
How do I enable this feature?
Steps
1. Navigate to Point of sale > Settings within your Shopify admin area. If you have previously used Happy Birthday on POS then you may see the Smart grid tile enabled. If so then it is important to now click Remove as this relates to the old style 'Loyalty' tile that will soon be deprecated by Shopify.
2. Click Add for the Additional areas option.
Your settings should now resemble the screenshot below:
3. Next step is to open the POS Home screen on your terminal:
4. Click the Add tile option:
5. Select the App tile option:
6. Select Happy Birthday app:
7. Click Add on the Capture new birthdays (POS UI extension) option:

8. Click Save:
The tile has now been added to your POS Home screen:
How will the discount appear in the checkout?
After enabling the feature, you will see a tile that says "Birthday Club" on the left hand side of the POS screen:
Tile behaviours
There are four states that the button can display. These are:
1. Add a customer - A customer has not yet has been added to the cart. Option to Add a customer to your Birthday Club
2. Add this customer - A customer has been added to the cart but is not a member of your Birthday Club. Option to Add this customer to your Birthday Club
3. Customer is already a member - The email associated with the order is also linked with a member of your Birthday Club, but does not have a currently valid birthday discount.
4. Apply Birthday Discount - The email associated with the order is also a linked to a member of your Birthday Club and does have a currently valid discount to use - Option to Apply Birthday Discount to order:
If they do have an active discount then clicking this tile will apply the discount to the Customer's current POS order:
